Campus weather data and forecasts

Go to weather.uncc.edu for current weather conditions on campus!

This is a research path I am developing mainly as the result of working with Warren Pettee, but also my fellow faculty: Matt Eastin, Casey Davenport, and Terry Shirley.

The clearest product of this research is the Niner Nation Weather display case on the first floor of McEniry, but we also have the mighty web portal at weather dot uncc dot edu. Warren was even featured in a nice write-up by our college PR people. General operations are a priority with the weather station and display, and linked to the weather station is the USLPN lightning sensor on our roof that sends data to the larger propietary network Other goals would be to include localized forecasts from WRF, and to ramp up the forecasters interface to state-of-the-art.

For now, we have the computing equipment via small funds, surplus, and gumption and there’s a nice showcase of weather and climate on the 1st floor. Here are some of the current weather station data traces from the weather station on the roof of McEniry. It is about 70 feet above the campus sidewalks. Some data from the last 24 hours are shown, and so is a climate figure for context, but go to http://weather.uncc.edu/ for a much more complete set of data and figures.
