Climate Dynamics (METR 4205 / ESCI 5205)

I taught Climate Dynamics in Spring 2017 where undergraduate and graduate students studied 1. Seasonal prediction, 2. El Nino-Southern Oscillation, 3. Modes of Climate Variability. The course largely drew from climatology data repositories at NOAA NCEI using their Climate at a Glance web portal. We used the Multivariate ENSO Index shown below and from NOAA ESRL Physical Sciences Division. Graduate students explored the atmosphere-ocean dynamics of ENSO, and how other modes of climate variability (NAO, PNA, AO) are related to weather variability in parts of the USA. This course may be different in terms of focus in Spring 2018, but I am hoping to bring elements of the “applied” statistics into another new course in the near future. In the meantime, here are the ENSO conditions:
